How to make the best out of your internship?

Updated: Sep 1, 2020

While we all spend so much time and effort to land the right internship, we often stop our research there. It is equally important to utilize and make the best out of an internship opportunity.

What should I focus on during an internship?

During an internship, you should have 4 key objectives:

  1. To learn as much possible (read more below)

  2. To be identified as a top performer from amongst the interns to receive a return offer/ letter of recommendation

  3. To identify whether you relate to the career line and job role and whether you want to work at that firm/institute

  4. Network with people and build contacts

How to make the best out of an internship?

Learning at an internship involves multiple aspects such as exploring and understanding the company and your job role further. Understand more about the industry. Interact with as many people as possible. You can also pick up additional work apart from what is assigned to you.

In case you identify that you’re not interested in working at that firm or in that role, then you can slightly compromise on (2) and focus completely on (1). Keep in mind that (1) and (2) might not always go hand in hand, at times you will have to make a choice or burn the midnight oil.

Additionally, focus on these two things:

  • Get a proof of internship completion (either a certificate or letter from the company)

  • Make a record of all the work you did during the internship. This will help you to add points to your resume and it can be revised before your interview in case the interviewer asks you details about your internship.
