Interview Tips: "Tell Me About Yourself"

Updated: Sep 1, 2020

This is the most famous interview question. Almost every interview begins with this question. Though it may seem like a really trivial question, it can drastically change the course of your interview.

What is the purpose of this question?

This question is typically used to start an interview. It is used as an ice breaker, to let the interviewer get a broad overview of the candidate and their background. It is also typically used by an interviewer to pick a few points or topics to begin a discussion on the same.

What opportunities does it provide for a candidate?

This question can be used as an opportunity to drop hints about a topic or project you want the interviewer to ask you further questions about. It can also be used as a chance to mention something that isn't on your CV/application. It can also be used to give a very high-level summary of your candidature.

How to answer this question?

The following three-part structure has proven to be quite effective:

1. First, briefly, state basic details about yourself/your background such as which city you come from, which college/course you are studying. Do not spend too much time here. Wrap it up 1-2 sentences. You needn’t go into details about your family background.

2. Second, mention highlights from your application. Here pick a few items from your profile which you think are quite exceptional, relate to the role you’re applying for, and make you stand out from the rest of the candidates. However, do not make this a long list of items. Mention about 3-5 points. Do not go into details, just mention each point in 1-2 sentences.

3. Third, as you conclude, it's best to mention why you want to take up that job/ work at that company/ study at that college. Again in 2-3 sentences.

Additional points to keep in mind:

  1. Your answer should ideally be 60-90 seconds. Don’t exceed that.

  2. Avoid repeating points. You have only 1-1.5 minutes, so use it wisely.

  3. Do your research and identify the key requirements/skills for that job/program and reflect that you have those requirements/skills through your answer.

  4. Prepare a proper answer beforehand. Don’t just write your answer once and be done with it. Edit and rewrite it multiple times until you are satisfied with it.

  5. Even though you’ve probably memorized your answer, when you speak in your interview, don’t let it appear so.

  6. You can add in a light/ humorous element in your answer. This could help to lighten the mood and make you more likable. Bear in mind it shouldn’t be something inappropriate or out of place. However, adding this element to your answer isn’t necessary.

  7. If the interviewer calls you by name, then don’t repeat your name while introducing yourself. The interviewer already knows that.

Alternative forms of the question:

"Tell me about yourself" may appear in other forms in your interview:

  1. Introduce yourself - can use the same answer structure as above

  2. Walk me through your CV - will need to adapt the answer slightly, sticking to items on your CV

With the above tips and discussion, you are well-equipped to frame a good answer in response to the most common interview question.
