Candidate’s Journey Through The Preparation Process

The candidate’s preparation consisted of preparing a promising resume, preparing for the tests, and then, for the interviews.

Preparing the resume

Preparing an attractive resume is very important as this sheet of paper will sum up your entire life and experiences for the interviewer. The candidate's resume preparation involved the following:

  • Researching different resume formats and templates.

  • Making sure everything is in order concerning chronology and relevance.

  • Setting up the details in a neat and concise manner such that it catches the interviewer's eye.

  • Preparing two resumes- one very formal and another one which was more creative and a little less formal (candidate made use of her photoshop skills for this).

  • Tailoring the resume according to the company and job role.

  • Including two or three strengths that are different from what is usually mentioned. For example: In this case, the candidate being someone who practices meditation mentioned emotional quotient as their strength made sure that the strength is also something that the company values.

Preparing for the tests

  • The candidate was preparing for the IPM test (Integrated Program in Management Test for IIM) and this helped her a lot with the tests in the selection process.

  • Preparation for the test involved being thorough with all the basics that usually come in an aptitude test like percentage, permutation and combination, data interpretation, and English comprehension.

Preparing for the Interview

  • The first step in being ready for the interview was preparing a list of the most common/very frequently asked interview questions and coming up with well-thought-out answers for them.

  • Preparing for why this company, in this case, Deloitte USI: Went through the Deloitte website, read their motto, mission, and vision statement, made sure that their values resonated with hers and also kept in mind to use keywords from their website while answering these questions in the interview.

  • To prepare a relevant answer to the question "why tax?": Thoroughly researched the job role, made sure that she'd fit in it, and used the information to form a good answer.

Tips from the Candidate

Tips to help you apply for the right company/ job profile

  • Get a list of all companies from your placement department. Research on it and think about which one you'd like to work with and which suits you the most. Contemplate on the company as well as your role there and see to it that your values resonate with that of the company. This will help you avoid any kind of regret later on.

  • While choosing the company, you can use websites like Glassdoor to get employee reviews. You should also check out the company website.

  • It's very important to pay close attention to how the company presents itself and their job roles while they come for their pre-placement talk. These talks will help you a lot in choosing the company wisely so it is advised to always sit for them.

  • Have basic knowledge of the field you're applying to and stay updated with the latest news related to it. The company will train you on the details anyway but you should be thorough with the basics.

  • The brand name also matters in case you want to apply elsewhere for a new job or master's.

Tips for the test

  • Enroll in a good online website like Mettl that specializes in aptitude tests and utilize that.

  • Learning a few new English words every day will also be very useful.

  • The tests will depend on the company and job role so be clear with that. If you know about the company then you'll be able to figure out what they'll test you on.

  • Research further on Aptitude tests, Logical reasoning, data interpretation, etc.

Tips for the Interview

  • If you know who is going to come for the interview in advance, it's good to look them up on LinkedIn and check their certifications, achievements, etc. This way you have an upper hand over the interviewer as they don't know you at all but now you know something about them. In this case, the candidate was able to build a rapport with an interviewer as she found out that he worked in Ernst and Young and she had previously participated in a competition conducted by their company.

  • Read the interviewer and assess the atmosphere in the room. Do this as soon as you enter the room. Try to figure out if the interviewer is relaxed or very formal and tailor your answers according to that.

  • If you don't know the answer to a question, be upfront and say that you don't.

  • Do your research, use Google, read about interview experiences, understand and apply what you learn through all of it.
